My wife is 9 months pregnant and scheduled to be induced in 10 days due to recent complications. Tonight, we came to the emergency room due to “10/10” overwhelming pain in her abdomen to the point that even subtle movement generated a stabbing sensation. To our surprise, the OB department refused to see her and insisted that she wait hours in the ER to see an ER doctor. This is particularly bizarre because we had presented to this same ER with less serious concerns twice earlier this pregnancy and were sent directly to OB. I am worried about the safety of my wife and child. If Penn Medicine prioritized safety, my very pregnant wife wouldn’t be waiting in an ER behind kids getting strep tests. I urge anyone thinking about delivering here or going through Penn’s maternal and fetal medicine department to look elsewhere. Update 1: It’s been two hours since we arrived. They stuck my wife in a hallway of the ER. They have not offered her pain meds, water, crackers, anything. Totally unacceptable. Update 2: Finally sent up to OB after 3 hours in ER. OB nurse said they weren’t told this was an OB issue. I said “did they tell you she was nine months pregnant?” Nurse replied, “I don’t know, I didn’t answer the call from the ER.” Update 3: I spoke to several nurses on the OB floor who claim they refused to see my wife because they were told by the ER that it was strictly a physical injury and not related to her pregnancy. That can’t be true. We were totally clear. We asked the ER staff multiple times to be sent to OB because the maternal and fetal medicine doctor told us that this pain was a symptom of the recently discovered complications. FINAL UPDATE: My wife is 3cm dilated. She should have been sent to OB immediately. Total mess. Summary: My wife presented to the ER nine months pregnant with extreme abdominal pain. OB refused to see my wife and told her to stay in ER for 3 hours over confusion that the abdominal pain was unrelated to pregnancy. After 3 hours in the ER, she was sent to OB and found to be 3cm dilated. 7/25 update: I never received a call from anyone at Penn to discuss what happened.

Parking can be an issue but one can find it. Easy to visit the doctor. Can find all services at the site.

Best experience that I’ve had at a hospital EVER. This was my first time there. Went to the ER due to complications with my asthma at 930 am. I was impressed from the very moment. Upon checking in, I was asked what was wrong rather than for my insurance information. That right there is amazing. Do you know how many people suffer through the registration process? Unbelievable. I waited in the waiting room maybe 5 minutes and then was called back to have my vitals checked and assessed. Once I was sent to the back for observation—within an hour, I met with the doctor, got treatments, had an x-ray, was diagnosed and referred to specialists, offered lunch, and was checked on my a volunteer who offered me a warm blanket while I waited. Towards the end of the visit, a person from registration asked for my insurance information and about 30 minutes later, I was sent home. Well taken care of, with a full follow up plan to further address my medical concerns. Thank you! Had I traveled to St. Peter’s or Robert Wood, I would still more than likely be there! I appreciate what you guys have going on there.

This place is fine. Nothing wrong with the doctors and nurses that work here - very nice and competent professionals. The main issue I have is that despite the fancy building and the flurry of activity - the institution still seems to have problems with things like ER wait times and bed allocation. Perhaps this is just an issue across all healthcare institutions- but it gives me little solace. My mother came in with non specific symptoms, had an extensive workup (CT, labs, even a lumbar puncture) and yet sat in the ER “boarding” for nearly two days. Crazy.

Delivered my baby here and have to say, one of the worst maternal care units. They don't have a nursery to care for the baby while the mommy recovers. The nurses do not do a single thing to help new moms unless you hound them, including helping the mom to the bathroom. Despite a relatively small census nurses are totally unresponsive and not helpful. They don't provide pain relief meds on time and the hospital doesn't even provide new parents with a take home package for the baby. they provide very few things unlike other hospitals like Saint Peters...avoid at all costs if possible

The staff at the emergency induction showed absolutely no hospotality. They were rude and showed a lack of empathy as they force me to answera menagirie of irtelavent questions as a crawled on the floor with pain.. Once your in the system they sit back and listen while you screem in agony. I beg and pleaded for help and the responded by closing my door. Additionally the surgical team has bkept on hold and strung me out for 24+ hours. I will never come here ever again.

I just spent 24 hours in this hospital waiting for a test no one actually finished putting the paperwork in for! Worse, I didn't know I was wasting my time, at the cost of thousands of dollars, until I caused a scene. Tomorrow is going to be day 3 at a hospital because they couldn't competently schedule an MRI. 3 days in the hospital for an MRI...But at least the left-over food is piling up and starting to smell.

Being a physician I made the biggest error in judgement and I brought my mother into this hospital with severe acute abdominal pain in the midst of a hypertensive crisis. We entered the ED at 530 pm and she hadn't seen a physician even at midnight. This hospital just looks very nice from the outside but everything on the inside is incredibly inferior. Everything from the bedside manner of the nurses, to the quality of care provided by the ED physicians. My only goal to bring my mother into this hospital was to rule out any serious and emergent conditions. (ie Aortic Dissection, Ischemia, Prior MI). We ended up leaving the hospital at 12:30 am without any diagnosis. She was given 975mg of Tylenol and told that she would need a CT scan. The results of the scan would take another 3 hours. I am a board certified attending cardiologist and I would not recommend this hospital's emergency department. By far the worst protocols in place and there is zero quality in patient care.
